Why let the facts stand in the way of a good story. AB 1070 does not now, nor did it ever, allow the police to stop a person just because they "looked Mexican". It does permit them to assess the immigration status of someone that they come lawfully into contact with. Keep in mind that, under Federal law, a non-citizen legally in the U.S. must carry their paperwork with them at all time, whether that be a green card, a visa or other as permitted by law.
Comparing this to Nazi Germany is fear-mongering at it's worst. You do have to have done something wrong, they are not permitted to stop you on the street and, for no other reason, demand your papers. They aren't looking for a scapegoat, they are looking at the enormous financial burden that ILLEGAL aliens place on the social systems of not just Arizona but all states. Let's not forget that 70% of Arizona residents and roughly 60% of the rest of the country support this bill. And those numbers are with the bogus media coverage of the law. Also, this law, while it has been signed by the Governor of Arizona, does not go into effect for a little under 90 days. ::michael Ed Leafe wrote: > On May 5, 2010, at 10:40 PM, geoff wrote: > >> Why is there a boycott of Arizona? > > [Moved to OT] > > They passed a law that essentially says that the police can stop anyone > and demand proof of citizenship; if you don't have the proof on you, you will > be arrested.
