No. Although that would work, it would also be a PITA to learn a new
language and figure out how to build distributables just to get email
functionality. On the other hand, if you want to get your feet wet with
Python, this might not be a bad first project. Internet connectivity
(http/ftp/smtp/pop/imap) is incredibly easy with Python and its built-in
('batteries included') without the hassles, costs, and vendor lock-in
associated with using 3rd party controls.
My original point was that I didn't see anything specific to Windows 7
that would prevent basic SMTP libraries from working. I cited our own
Python development experience which produced applications with SMTP and
SMTP/S (required by gmail) functionality that were created before
Windows 7 shipped and seem to run fine on Windows 7 so far.
Sorry for the confusion.
