I just (in Sept) dumped my old Sony 27" CRT and bought a Samsung 40".  I 
went cheap (relatively) and passed on both 3D and LED - got it for $830. 
  It's well worth it, works great, looks great, and when you can get a 
channel in HD it's stunning!

I think 3D is a gimmick, for which you pay plenty, but LED is definitely 
brighter, but costs nearly 50% more.

Go for it, you won't be sorry.  (See if your cable includes HD.)
