Ken - if I am not mistaken - this sounds like another variant of what Kevin just suggested w/Ubuntu. I guess you were both writing up your responses at the same time.
I got the Ubuntu burned and ready for me - although - I am first going to try the other suggestion by Andrew - since I know that for starters it may be a little simpler than the Unix Boot/Live CD methods.
