If the error is somewhat reproducible, why don't you log LIST STATUS and
LIST MEMORY in your error handler. Then you would know in which area what
table is open and whether all variables do indeed have to correct value.

Does the user run a Samba file server (Linux, Mac, stand-alone network
drive)? I've seen timing issues on those related to creating, deleting and
locking files.
