IIRC SPT doesn't create a cursor if no results are returned. But at a minimum 
VFP creates something with the data structure, whether a temp file when using 
INTO CURSOR or a "real" DBF when using INTO TABLE.

Not true, Al.  Here's an easy test to confirm it does create an empty
cursor:  SELECT * FROM YourTable WHERE 1=0 INTO CURSOR EmptyCursor
