I brought the eSATA enclosure I have over to a friend. We connected it to
his desktop eSATA port and it works. I didn't write down the exact
connection details, but it said it was a SCSI drive.

So, a note in my laptop help about the Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology,
states:
"At this time, the application does not provide support for port
multipliers. Devices connected to a port multiplier will not be detected or
displayed in the storage system view, unless the devices is connected to
port 0 of the port multiplier. These devices will be reported and will
behave as if they were directly connected to a port on the system."

(Typo's or omissions might be mine as copy/paste did not get the note.)

I have a feeling this is the root cause. So now I look for a different eSATA
enclosure for my 320GB 7200 RPM SATA drive.
