Well, just last night I gave up on the same scenario. I had a HP
printer (D1530) hooked up to my Ubuntu machine, and:

1. The Mac users in our household were never able to gain access to
it. I tried everything. (I'm sure I still missed something.)

2. The Ubuntu driver for the printer was faulty. It always said I was
low on ink, even right after replacing the cartridges. Also, I tried
to print some color documents. From "U' the colors were wrong. I
switched it over to a Winders Fister machine, and it came out perfect.
