As I always say.
Your "left" would be termed "fascism" by the rest of the world.

The Patriot Act was extended and Gitmo is still in operation. Hopefully we will learn more about this in the next debate, which covers foreign policy.

Below is an article from the NY Times:

#--------------------------------------
Excerpt:

WASHINGTON — Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney has said much about torture as part of terrorism investigations during the 2012 general campaign. But the future of American government practices when interrogating high-level terrorism suspects appears likely to turn on the outcome of the election.

Mitt Romney said he plans to "use enhanced interrogation techniques which go beyond those that are in the military handbook right now,” at a news conference in Charleston, S.C., in December.

In one of his first acts, President Obama issued an executive order restricting interrogators to a list of nonabusive tactics approved in the Army Field Manual. Even as he embraced a hawkish approach to other counterterrorism issues — like drone strikes, military commissions, indefinite detention and the Patriot Act — Mr. Obama has stuck to that strict no-torture policy.

By contrast, Mr. Romney’s advisers have privately urged him to “rescind and replace President Obama’s executive order” and permit secret “enhanced interrogation techniques against high-value detainees that are safe, legal and effective in generating intelligence to save American lives,” according to an internal Romney campaign memorandum.

While the memo is a policy proposal drafted by Mr. Romney’s advisers in September 2011, and not a final decision by him, its detailed analysis dovetails with his rare and limited public comments about interrogation.

From comments:

Why is it okay to torture anyone we consider an enemy, especially if that person is or may be Muslim but it's not okay for them to torture our soldiers? Why is it okay to hold a suspect teenager for years in Gitmo without telling his family he's there but not okay for them to do it to our people? If we want to be considered humane it would serve us well to be humane to those we hold in prison or in our power. It seems as if some feel that creating enemies to defend against is more important than decreasing the reasons they have to attack us. We had the sympathy of nearly every country in this world after 9/11/2001. Bush and company blew it. They marched us into one unnecessary war, redefined prisoners of war as enemy combatants, and tortured some in violation of the Geneva Convention. Now we have Romney complaining that Obama, who has been unable to close Gitmo, has not been strong enough?

If Romney wants to continue the Republican agenda of eliminating civil rights, violating the Geneva convention with respect to POWs, I suggest he look at what happens to regimes that do it. He has some excellent examples in Africa, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. I'm sure that North Korea and China would be happy to give him some pointers too.

OTOH, (and these are real questions) has he taken down the patriot act? Has he closed Guantanamo prison? Has he officially ended govt condoning torture? Has he subjected US troops to international laws as most countries do?

Are they the same goals that he had in 2008 because we all know how well he did in accomplishing those.

If I were President Obama, I would be feeling very unappreciated right now, considering all that was accomplished during his first four year in office.

1) When president Obama assumed office in Jan 2008, the economy was hemorrhaging jobs at the rate of around 800,000 to 600,000 per month. This continued over a period of 10 to 12 months; before, the Obama administration was able to reverse the trend. It is true unemployment stayed above 8% for 43 months as Governor Romney claims, but this is misleading in that around 12 months of that were months in which the economy lost job, due to the Great Recession, and the following 30 to 32 months the economy added jobs finally bring unemployment down to 7.8%

2) The Great Recession of 2007 ended sometime during the summer of 2009, and the economy began to expand again; rather than contract (eg deflate).

3) President Obama saved the auto industry.

4) President Obama passed Universal Health Care.

5) President Obama ended "don't ask, don't tell".

6) President Obama brought the stock market back form its DJIA low of 6,547.05, March 9, 2009, to a high of around 13,500 today, which is within striking distance of setting new all time highs.

7) President Obama appointed 2 women to the Supreme Court, one of which was the first Hispanic to ever sit on the bench.

8) President Obama ended the war in Iraq and is bring the war in Afghanistan to a close.

9) President Obama took out Osama bin laden
