Put differently: eigenvectors indicate direction but
not distance. (For people wondering what eigenvectors
are: the direction of an eigenvector is the direction
of the dot product of the matrix and the eigenvector.)

Sometimes people encode the eigenvalue in the length
of the eigenvector but in many applications this is
pointless (and inefficient).
