When I was at IBM I took over a program product - IC/1 - and it was written
for a very old version of APL and had to be backward compatible with oldest
versions of VM/GDDM/TSO/...

I rewrote it - IC/E - to use onle newest version of APL2/GDDM/VM/TSO/... and
over 90% of the code disappeared

And not only did the code get smaller it did not take very long to do and it
was very easy to add a bunch of new added functionality that came with years
of added functionality in the surroundings

It took me much longer and required much more effort to convince the bean
counters at IBM - much more than 90% - to allow the changes to go out the
door
