Doing that eliminated the error, but nothing seemed to happen -- as far as I can tell, no program ran. I appreciate the help you folks have given so far. This seems simple, but, for some reason, I keep getting hung up, mostly on the ./ I need at the start of the name of an executable. The program runs from cmd and - From bash, just not from anything I initiate in J. I'll try a few more things and then let my subconscious work on it overnight. It's seemingly not worth the time it's taken me, but I would like to be able to do this. I imagine I'll be embarrassed by the easy nature of the answer, whenever I get it. I did try Raul's suggestion of making sure cygblas.dll was in my path. It wasn't, and, when I fixed that, I can make the command work from cmd, but it still fails when I run shell''. I thought I had duplicated Raul's copy on my system earlier; I'll have to try it again and, if it works, figure out the differences.
