I saw that you're using R 2.4.1, whereas I was still on version
2.3.1 , not having needed to run R for a while.
Checking latest versions at the R website, I've found and
downloaded v 2.5.1 . This threw up the same error with the J
Wiki example as you and Rik reported until I followed Chris's
advice and downloaded and ran Rsrv250.exe
(ie http://cran.r-project.org/contrib/extra/dcom/RSrv250.exe)

So - version 2.5.1 evidently also supports calls from J.

The VB debugger opened with a complaint, something about Excel.
Thinking it would be repeatable, I closed it to concentrate on getting
the J interface to work, and now the debugger isn't complaining.
This is because you have not completely uninstalled the old rdcom
installation. Open Excel, go to Tools|Add-Ins and uncheck the RExcel addin.

Thanks! I haven't used Excel in so long, I don't even think of it
anymore (I use J or perhaps OO.o). When I did as you described, I found
I also had GS4Word installed, and I had to uncheck a couple of rdcom
instances there. Now I can launch and close Excel with impunity.

The test case on the Wiki page now works, except that I get a
  different answer. :-)
The test case on the Wiki page returns a random number generated by R.

Hence my :-)
