Yes, you are correct.

My description of the problem was based on my assumption of what had happened 
in the past when I've been bitten by this, rather than on actual analysis of 
the issue - not a good strategy!

However the user prompt I suggested below is probably still a reasonable way to 
handle the issue. In addition to making the changes as it does currently, the 
script should also be made writable.
