Mike - I have quite a lengthy reply to this but it's to be part of my talk at BAPLA next week, so I'll post it on the J wiki in a few weeks. So, to summarize without giving away too much, I'll just say that I really like the APL character set too but I've come to the conclusion that the way J does it offers some great advantages.
