Here I may have miscommunicated.  I was using language versions as an
analogy; based on what I understood of your idea, your version with
different characters seems equivalent (to me) to writing Pascal with
keywords in French.  Did I misunderstand you?

I agree with most of the rest of what you wrote, so I won't comment
further except to say that I wish I were better at it after years using
