And if I wanted the original style a trivial adaptation suffices:
>@{.^:(1=#)L:1;/`...@.(1=#)L:0 nest NEST

PS: Do you think your method would work if you were nesting boxes rather
than integers? I only ask because mine doesn't. Of course, once I read
your code I'll be able to answer the question myself.
