It's an ANN, but that doesn't really matter. It could just as well be a look up table. I invented it 20 years ago for my masters, but maybe somebody else did something similar in the meantime. I also have some brainstorms at digilife.sf.net on the same theme, namely, evolution of behaviours.
The way to interpret that program is that the environment provides for strategies that can be part of stable behaviours, amongst others that lead to chaos. We can talk about that without using judgemental terms like pleasure, pain, correct, wrong, etc, which have no place in evolution, not at the fundamental level anyway. A NN will need a hebbian learning rule to pick out those behaviours, but if it weren't an NN at all, the point would be the same. Even an electronic president would have to go round kissing babies at election time. Adrian.
