The answer to my original question, then, is

That is, using select from instead of take from reduces the dimension of the
result, possibly to a scalar, rather than giving you a 1 by x piece of the
array.
I guess I knew that. I had used take instead of from because I thought, as
I remember, take is less likely to error because it will fill, this was an
externally specified parameter. Well, I guess now I know of the other bits
of the definition of take that I forgot. And I can use the last
construction above to fix that in the future.
