As other theologians have pointed out, context makes a difference:

    ]sam =: 123
123
    ]timothy =: ,123
123
    #$sam
0
    #$timothy
1

The 123's at the left margin look the same but represent respectively an atom 
and a list.  (In math called a scalar and a vector.)
