Can you please print there the motd itself so that people would see it
upfront? Kind of like:

MOTD 2011-05-19 16:19 Launching urgent stuff, leave on manual, Jane
}}}
Here the timestamp would be taken from the motd file attributes and
the subject would be the first ~58 characters of the motd content.
Such a message would be much more informative than just a generic one
saying that there is some motd and that people should press E to
read/edit it.
