> It may be worth to mention that with cited/refersto/citedby operators
the citation searches were behaving exactly as you say, i.e. not forcing
any sort/rank options upon the user, keeping the usual search defaults.
Which I think makes it even more natural to expect that the pre-fab links
behave in the same way.
> The question of defaults was only with respect to pre-fabricated `Cited
by 123 records` links. Here, as we mused about it on the chat, arguably
the best solution is to try to respect any sort/rank options that a given
user might have selected when getting to the given dynamic page display.
I've just implemented that and I'm going to commit in a minute.
Excellent!
> So the question stays mostly only for those `Cited by 123 records` links
that we pre-format in a static context, such as for webcoll-generated
search interface pages. Here I kept the citation ranking being offered as
previously for the time being. But these issues are not of direct impact
for INSPIRE, because we don't have collections yet.
I'd think the best thing here is to have a universal default, i.e. for all
pre-fab searches, that is the same as the default in the drop down.
Unless a search is clearly labeled or otherwise obviously escaping this
default, then it seems like the general default is correct. For us
(INSPIRE) I'd argue date descending is the best default at the moment,
though as you say this is less urgent or relevant at the moment, since
noone will notice.
> BTW we may have to revisit this issue again in the future perhaps when
various recommender boxes will enter the game.
Right, exactly. When we try to recommend things, we should be clear that
that is what we are doing, and those links, etc., should be made obviously
different in someway from a default search.
