An alternative solution would be to change easily the view of each
collection. For example, the homemade system called Aubrey
(http://vphill.com/journal/?p=2823) at the University of North Texas
(http://digital.library.unt.edu/) is very nice in that respect. Take any
collection, and change it from list, grid or brief:

However, I still think the materials of some collections, like those of
graphical material, should present a default view different than others.
