Hello Tibor and Sam and thank you for your feedback!
It's good to know that Invenio 1.2.x java/python code on Solr indexing is still robust enough for production (and that indeed holds most CERN's fulltexts!)

I posted in the mailing list not because I discovered a specific issue with the provided Solr version... I was simply asking feedback on it's status and usage by the community while at the same time wondering whether anyone managed to compile the java code to make it work with newer Solr versions. There is no specific reason for wanting the latest Solr (after all it's not open to the public, so no security issues arise), it's just that seeing the admin page on solr-1.3.x took me back to the early days of the web :p -although in this case looks don't do justice to the program. In any case, reading your replies, I feel confident enough and will definitely will give it a go!

Thanks again,
Theodoros

I'd rather say it is "feature frozen", not "unmaintained", because
firstly the Solr 3 support coming with Invenio 1.2 is working well and
can be used for fulltext indexing in production, and secondly if you try
it out and find a problem we'd happily merge a fix. We simply did not
proceed with further upgrades to Solr 4 or Solr 5 as per the adoption of
Elasticsearch that is now the only IR engine in Invenio 3.0.
