Coalition Drives Taliban From Southern Afghan Stronghold

After years of entrenchment, it seems the U.S. is finally dislodging the
Taliban from its Afghan strongholds in the south's Kandahar Province, reports
The New York Times. The area served as Taliban headquarters for most of the
war, but a buildup of 12,000 American and NATO troops this summer, combined
with advanced weaponry, has finally driven insurgents from their hideouts. The
military push was accompanied by efforts on the civilian front, which seem to
have helped secure gains in the region. NATO commanders are cautious to trumpet
the success, aware that other regions of Afghanistan thought to be cleared of
Taliban fighters have fallen back into insurgent hands. "Afghans will tell you,
if you have a peaceful Kandahar, you will have a peaceful Afghanistan," said
General Nick Carter, who has overseen the mission as commander of NATO forces
in southern Afghanistan. "I think only time will tell."
