I had to import files from an old ( 89 ) EE-designer. For files with little
or no change you should
import the gerber data.
If you have to change many things it's less work to do it completly new and
have correct
schematic-sheets  and netlists after this process.
For difficult footprints you can import the gerber on a mech-layer and place
the pads on the
correct positions.
