I think you might want to try placing a polygon plane instead of a fill.
Polygon planes provide thermal relief and don't connect to other nets.

thanks for responding.  but i'm not exactly sure about
what you mean when you say polygon planes don't connect
to "other" nets.  is the fill connecting to every thru-
hole within its boundaries? 

actually a polygon plane is what i intend to use in the
end, because the area is fairly irregular.  the reason
i started with the fill is that i thought it was easier
to experiment with and that whatever electrical charac-
teristics it had would be exhibited by the polygon plane
also.
