Ian, I solved the problem last night. Layer 0 is not a physical layer. The line mentioned in the error message was the end of the ASCII file and was only one bracket. Actually the problem was in some Protel pad shapes and parts with missing reference designators. PCAD does not allow patterns without designators. The problem was to locate those hidden footprints in Protel99 because they were not in the list. It appeared to be a small mark on top overlay layer used to show the first pin of some connectors.
