SCH, and it doesn't work fine. I'm placing all the "Part types" on 
top of each other not the components tehmselves. "Part type" is 
the "CAP_22N_5V_0402_10%" style field, and on an array of, say, 
decouplers, that's a lot of duplicated information.

Indeed - but, as you point out, that's a daft thing to do :)
Have a play with doing global operations by double-clicking on a 
part type string - it's definitely broken, with respect to selection 
state.
