You're right, this changes the behavior as you thought. I didn't intend it to do that. I fixed up this patch to avoid that problem and sent out the revised version for you to look over. I pushed the rest of the series without this patch, as I seem to recall that you mentioned elsewhere that the rest of the patches look good.
