Yeah, the sample rate being set by external buttons can certainly be an issue.
I once had a problem during a remote session at a venue where a DigiMax
interface with ADAT output was the clock master and I had inadvertently hit the
sample rate button which jumped it from 48K to 32K. Little did I know that, as
a result, the ADAT transport was now recording a 32K rate at a 48K speed so the
resulting audio, when played back, was several notes higher and faster than the
original. Luckily, I was able to find an old Otari external clock that had the
ability to output clock as low as 32K and we played back the material at normal
speed and re-recorded onto another ADAT machine. Of course, the frequency
response was now limited to 16K but nobody noticed at all and it was only for
one of the songs on the album. Geez, those were the days…

For LightPipe input, at least with Pro Tools, you're alerted if the sample
rates don't match so the inadvertent button presses aren't an issue. I've used
a Focusrite OctoPre some years ago for a few remote live shows and it worked
really well. Again, that was thanks to the confidence of not having clock
issues within Pro Tools. These days, I'd imagine that most DAWs would behave
the same way.
