You always give such detailed, and such wonderful information that is so
easy to understand! Thank you! This is absolutely excellent! Might I ask
one question in regards to doing this type fade out with automation?
I agree entirely that it would be so much easier with a surface, but for
those like me who don't have one on hand, here's my question. Each time
you VO+down arrow on that master volume fader, it's writing one event of
automation. I remember there being a way to smoothen that out so that it
sounds more natural, and so it takes all those individual written events
and consolidates them into one. How do I do that? I've honestly forgotten.

Press Command Num Pad 4 to bring up the Automation dialog. Make sure automation
isn't bypassed. Make sure Volume is selected for automation. Close the dialog
with the same shortcut. Make sure your master track's automation mode is set to
Write. Focus and interact with the master track's volume fader. Engage the
transport. Press Vo Down Arrow to make the fade. Note that you'll be moving in
half a decibel increments so you'll be pressing the down arrow quite a lot.
When you're done, press the Space Bar. It's quite a bit easier with a control
surface.

If you definitely want to use the master fader, you have to do the fade-out by
automation.
Another way is to bounce all required tracks to a new e.g. stereo track.
After that move the insertion point to that location where the fade should
start and press Control+G.
This will create a fade-out according tot he existing fade settings in the Pro
Tools preferences.
