no i did not check the /etc/apt/preferences but they should be ok. i will
double check again later today when i am back at home. The xorg server tried
few times to start the X and failed, after few atempts it just said it could
not start up and exited to console. Laptop is a IBM X32 with ATI radeon L6 i
think. pretty standard.
