no i did not check the /etc/apt/preferences but they should be ok. i will
double check again later today when i am back at home. The xorg server tried
few times to start the X and failed, after few atempts it just said it could
not start up and exited to console. Laptop is a IBM X32 with ATI radeon L6 i
think. pretty standard.

two machines, same config = same packages. As Ricardo pointed you must
have some small diff in preferences or apt.conf.

the only differences i see is that one says :
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ lenny main contrib non-free

while the other says :
deb http://ftp.es.debian.org/debian/ lenny main contrib non-free

So the only difference would be the .es i thought this should not make a bit difference. I put all with no .es (the desktop was like that) and did a aptitude update

For xorg, check the log file in /var/log, look for lines that starts
with (EE), use grep :)

something like this is ok?
sudo grep -re \(EE\) /var/log/Xorg.0.log

it says
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.

its the only match bbut does not look like anything meaningful...

The blue screen says something like "X hass been disabled. Restart GDM configured properly"

also I see this error in the cnsole after the first X crash

xauth: error in locking authority file /home/r2d2/.Xautority
