No actually, changes to system files get persisted too.

meta+esc is the default for opening the launcher menu (meta being the
one often with the windows logo on). I've never been able to get the
meta key correctly mapped on my Eee though (did try some hacking
around with keymaps etc but never attained any wisdom) so I'm using
the alternative alt+esc...
