Do you have some firewall enabled? (that's the most common error) Aside from that, I've already seen a more exoteric error on linux where the lan card was not correctly configured... (or eth0 interface... something like that) and that could also give connection errors... (if you take a look at the bug reports at sf you can probably find it).
