That's strange.  On my system, if I wrap the image in a sprite, I find that 
I do NOT need to explicitly enable alpha blending in OpenGL to make that 
dithering disappear.  Perhaps different OpenGL implementations have 
different rendering defaults?  I can see why explicitly stating the 
rendering mode would be important then.
