We (tg maintainers) know about this and I can tell from my experience that most Ubuntu users (I am a happy Ubuntu user so no flame intended) do not have gcc or the required headers on their machine... Which puts them in the same place as windows users --> easy_install breaks on simplejson and they don't understand the error message... C dependency in any of your own dependencies means you'll need to provide binary packages for at least 5 platforms (win32, macosX (<=10.4, >=10.5), Linux x86, Linux x64). This can become quite a burden if the said dependency does not provide such binary eggs and changes often.
