Github is probably the «main» reason, the platform is awesome, the API is great, you can manage organization, it is widely used and known... to the end we reach a broader audience with better integration. All supported Pyramid/Pylons projects are or will be under Github, but for others we don't have control and we don't want to force anyone to use tools we have chosen.
