So it sounds like, in general, we can't use the pre-compiled Lucene
2.0 jar file distributed as part of the Lucene release.  Unless we are

This appears to be correct for Intel Mac OS X.

What happens if you compile with one of the Sun compilers?  The Apple
one should be the Sun one, but since it's not distributed by Sun, I'm
not sure it is (exactly).

I don't have the Sun compiler. I use Mac OS X (ppc or intel), Ubuntu or Gentoo Linux and a tiny little Windows.
