I see your point, but doesn't python-list already fill the role you indicate may be diminished? Seems like the new list is meant to fill a different need. Perhaps one concern would be over-use of the mentoring list when someone would be fine with python-list. I just don't see people turning away from python-list in favor of the mentoring list.
