To add another datapoint to this: IPython also moved to Github in
Autumn 2010, and here's the number of contributors each month:
http://www.ohloh.net/p/ipython/contributors/summary

Of course, some of the increase is 'drive by' contributions - little
fixes that core developers could do in a few minutes. But that's quite
healthy, because a lot of those are things that core developers
wouldn't get round to any time soon. Anecdotally, I also think that
making it easy to contribute makes people more likely to contribute
again.

I don't think the mechanism necessarily has to be pull requests, but I
do think there should be simple instructions for new contributors. For
example, I made a minor contribution to logilab-astng a few months
ago. Here's the home page:
http://www.logilab.org/856

It's not obvious to a newcomer how to contribute. There's a patches
tab, but no 'submit' option there, and the patches it lists are a year
old, so it's probably not in use. Source code? It's easy to view files
and commits, but there's nothing about making changes.

Best wishes,
Thomas
