PYTHONPATH should include a number of different directories, not just
the one you gave start up mayapy, then take a look at sys.path to see
what ones you'll likely need.

However, if you really want it to behave the same as mayapy, you'll
have to do other stuff as well - for instance, if you have any .pth
files in your maya python directory, you'll need to do

site.addsitedir('C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya2010\Python\Lib\site-packages')

However, if you're new to python in general, I recommend taking the
easy way, and use mayapy.
