I agree that in the end distance & duration are the most important
pieces of information. But I don't agree on your conclusion that they
are always the most relevant parts of input. Imagine

no gps device, running new or unknown course (e.g. en vacances ;)
get exact duration (wristwatch) say 73:20 min and estimate  pace by
experience to something 5:00-5:20, so take average 5:10 min/km.
Plz don't let the user divide 73.33 by 5.167 on her own to get the
distance ;)
