Gary, the only way I can come up with would be to convert the files first ( you can use QDVDAuthors generated shell commands from the CommandQueueDialog ), and then build your DVD using the converted files.
The mpeg2 format also has its pitfalls, as the xine backend can't correctly calculate the video length, and thus the thumbnails are all over the place. I prefer MPlayers backend for that reason.
