True, it works fine now, thanks again.
These vrt files seem a great way for dealing with long
time series of images.

I run:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/CHINA$ ./gdal_vrtmerge.py -separate -o tm2.vrt *.tif

and get:
./gdal_vrtmerge.py: line 1: !DOCTYPE: No such file or directory
./gdal_vrtmerge.py: line 2: PUBLIC: command not found
./gdal_vrtmerge.py: line 3: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'
./gdal_vrtmerge.py: line 3: ` "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd";>'

I'm using ubuntu hardy, have gdal and FWTools 2.0.6
(i.e. gdal_merge.py works fine)

Is there anything I have to do in order to install gdal_vrtmerge.py ?

You have downloaded the file wrong.

Propably you went to [1], right-clicked the [2], "saved as", tried to run the file. This won't work because what you got is an XHTML file. You have to download it raw: go to [1], *left-click* [2], navigate to bottom, left click "Original Format".
