I'm happy for companies to do whatever they want (and are allowed) to do. As for the QGIS project having a stable branch, I think it's treating the symptoms rather than the cause. I'd much rather see the effort that that might consume be put into making the main branch more stable. With a strong test suite regressions can become very rare, even with constant development of new features.
I'm fairly new to QGIS, so I can't speak with a full understanding of the current situation. I just wanted to share my hopes for the future of the project.
