You can use the Saga dissolve (via processing toolbox). It is faster
then QGIS's but I think they are working on a solution for that.

Emne: [Qgis-user] Geoprocessing dissolve tool
Hi all,
I tried using the dissolve tool from the QGIS geoprocessing tools
and all features get dissolved together, resulting in only one
feature, regardless of the dissolve field. I tried with several
datasets. Do you have the same problem or is it only me ? I've used
this tool in the past, and it worked ok.
Thanks for your help !
Julie.
