Nope. ADSL. (Both are !)

I figured it might be that that was the cause of the problems, however, the 
bumff from Virgin makes no mention of needing a cable router They simply say to 
"plug the ethernet lead from the cable modem into one of the ports on your 
router". I can then "connect as many other routers or equipment as I like to 
the router".

I was wondering if this was why I was seeing an 81.x.x.x IP address when I 
checked the IP of the connected equipment. 

Ah well, a trip to PC World may be in order for a proper router. Oh hum !
