And lets not foget Dr Foster : Dr Foster Went to Gloucester ... He stepped in a PUDDLE Right up to his MIDDLE .... Generations of children have been puzzled by that one. It seems that the original word - PIDDLE - used to mean a small stream. When it became slang for a bodily function (don't we get hung up on bodily functions in the UK?) the DGs in those dys changed it to puddle.
